This April, the teachers at Bowie High School selected Mia Mendez as the student of the month for her exemplary grades.
"The pride is overwhelming," said Mendez's mother, Sarah Mendez. "Her grades have always been above average, and it's not very surprising she was chosen. We hope she can continue to go even further in her academic career."

The teachers at Bowie nominated several students to be chosen for Student of the Month, and then gathered in order to come to an agreement on which would end up taking the title.
"Several students are chosen for Student of the Month, but none of them are told, because we don't want them to start getting competitive," animation teacher John Nourse said.
Although her grades are exemplary and her teachers confirm her artistic talent is undeniable, Mia has been one of the most relatable students to be chosen for the title this year.
"It's kind of hard [to be a good role model], because sometimes I do good things, and other times I'm too lazy to do good things," Mia said.
Being preoccupied with oneself is usually a quality looked down upon, but the time Mia spends not volunteering is spent trying to entertain others.
"I run a YouTube channel, and I make money off of it," Mia said.
Details about the channel were not revealed, but making money off of a YouTube channel requires a certain amount of popularity (subscribers). Students everywhere use YouTube as recreational time off from homework, and it's a great help to those who need it.
"Grades are usually what gets someone the title of 'Student of the Month,' and that was certainly a part of it, but Mia has shown a creativity that little are able to display," art teacher Amelia Richardson said. "Hopefully this will be the start of artistic consideration among the staff."
